Basis Group is a Melbourne based building company for clients who want quality and excellence. From our passion for delivering innovative projects of the highest quality, to our genuine commitment for providing exceptional customer service our experience of our well-regarded team will make the project delivery experience smooth and stress-free.

Our focus is on delivering quality fitout and refurbishment projects. We are about quality not quantity. Preferring to complete a small number of projects exceptionally well rather than risk over committing and letting our clients down.

All three of Basis Group’s directors have a hands on roll throughout the life of a project, Nick in the estimating and project management while John and Tom deliver projects from site. Through this approach, we ensure the critical project parameters such as quality, programme and costs remain in control.

All three Directors have over 15 years experience in delivering quality projects within the Melbourne commercial and residential markets – ranging from $200,000 to $20 million dollar projects.

We draw on our fundamental principles of collaboration, integrity and hard work to develop partnerships with our clients and their designers, spending time to understand the ideas and engineering at the heart of the design to deliver the very best results.

Our People                

Basis Group’s strength is our people. We have a team of highly skilled people who are passionate about the fast pace fitout and refurbishment sector. With a balanced mix of old hats and fresh blood, Basis Group brings experience, enthusiasm and fresh thinking to every project. Our strong focus on development, training and mentorship is creating a supporting culture where knowledge and communication is free flowing across the divisions. Basis Group has sound procedures and support system in place enabling our people to be efficient and responsive.

Nick has a strong understanding of the fitout and refurbishment market in Melbourne, having delivered many commercial office and hospitality projects over the past fifteen years. Prior to starting Basis Group, Nicholas has been in leadership positions (Director | General Manager | Construction Manager) at multiple $100 million dollar construction companies. In addition to his extensive business management skills, Nick also has two degrees, a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) which he graduated with Honours and a Bachelor of Science (Physics) both from the University of Melbourne. He is also an accredited auditor for QA, OH&S and Environmental and is a Green Star Professional.
NICHOLAS FISH
MANAGING DIRECTOR
Tom is a carpenter by trade with over twenty five years experience in the construction industry in Melbourne. Tom has worked with international and local architects on high profile projects such as the Trade Centre, Crown Casino, Docklands Football Stadium and the Mercy Hospital. His vast project history includes banks, prisons, apartments, schools and hospitals in addition to commercial office and hospitality projects. Tom has gained a strong understanding of the security and safety requirements of working in such sensitive live environments and what’s involved to keep all parties safe throughout the project works.
TOM STRMECKI
CONSTRUCTION DIRECTOR
John holds both an unlimited commercial and domestic builders licence and has been part of Melbourne’s construction landscape for over twenty years. During this time he has successfully owned and operated his own business for fifteen plus years working with prominent Melbourne architects creating exceptional homes and offices for his clients. The majority of Johns client base came from referrals and repeat clients. In addition to being a Registered Building Practitioner and a HIA member, John also has an Electronics Degree. John has an enviable reputation for delivering quality projects and is proud of what he has been able to achieve for his clients.

Systems





Basis Group utilises a bespoke delivery system
Our systems are those expected of larger more established companies, but with the benefit of being bespoke to our core business, commercial and hospitality fitout and refurbishment.
All Basis Group staff are inducted into our bespoke delivery system when they commence with us. This system encompasses our project delivery, financial reporting as well as our safety, environmental and quality system used on site.
Our delivery system manages all our document control, quality assurance process and all project administration. The financial control component involves monthly reporting against project budgets, using a bespoke system combining MYOB and excel.
Basis Group’s delivery system has been developed to comply with current safety, environmental and quality standards and legislation. Every project is audited to ensure that not only is the safety documentation executed correctly but it’s maintained and understood at site level. We encourage staff to explore safer ways to work and contribute to the continual development of our systems.
We are very proud of our safety record having a spotless safety record with no workcover claims or enforced undertakings against the business. 
Projects


The $5.4m Federation Square Digital Facade Initiative was a complex project in a 24/7 live environment. It involved construction of a five storey high digital façade made up of over 850 LED panels creating a state-of-the-art public screen for Fed Square that wrapped around the northern and eastern side of the Transport Building which also remained in occupation and continued trading.
Construction had to be perfect to ensure every panel of the high-definition event screen worked correctly and met the 6mm pitch required to ensure high-quality display from a distance.
A technically challenging project, in addition to the space remaining in use by the public 24/7, all of the overhead catenary wiring was removed, refurbished and replaced. A new stage was supplied and installed including all services being contained within the structure and a new disabled access lift was installed.
The project was delivered under a design and construct contract and completed within 12 weeks with no delays.
